Abortion might be a complicated issue – as a matter of fact, it is. It has existed since the Classical Ages. It has been talked about and discussed since probably the beginning of religion. But even so, people can’t seem to attain a consensus on the matter. Some wanted it abolished. A few wanted the idea back again. Some believe it might be the solution to overpopulation, understanding that it’s the mother’s choice if she wants to keep her baby or not and hers alone. Some are convinced that abortion is mostly a mortal sin, in whatever way you look at it. They believe, abortion is murder, period.
Individuals have diverse views on abortion, depending on who you ask. But most people today would check with the Bible verses. Everyone understands the Bible is against abortion. The Church even opposes it. But let me tell you a little something the majority do not know. Are you aware abortion isn’t mentioned in the Holy Bible?
Shocked? Well, at least, not directly. Abortion was heavily practiced in the course of human history. It was practiced before, during and after the events of the Bible. But God chose to never address the topic directly in His Bible verses. A number of Bible verses, however, can’t be denied their intentions to show God’s stance on the actual matter of abortion. Analyze the following Bible verses about abortion.
Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (NAS, Jeremiah 1:4-5)
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” Proverbs 31:8 (NIV)
I will say to God: … “Your hands shaped me and made me. Will you now turn and destroy me? Remember that you molded me like clay. Will you now turn me to dust again? (NIV, Job 10:2, 8-9)
“Thou shalt not kill.” Exodus 20:13 (KJV)
Evidently the Bible verses have something to say about abortion. As soon as the fetus was conceived in the womb, the woman becomes a mother, and the fetus becomes a human being, consecrated by God, even before birth, as “a prophet to the nations”. God calls all of us to speak up for individuals who are unable to speak. The Bible verses are certainly trying to say something – that Lord God will never favor abortion. “Thou shalt not kill,” He tells us.
Today activists like to throw arguments among themselves in relation to the issue of abortion. There are pro-life activists and there are pro-choice activists. Some search for answers within their own conscience, while others look to the Bible verses for instruction. Though in any case, the Lord God’s stance is apparent. Christian believers should not tolerate abortion under any circumstance. The Bible verses suggest that much.
