How are Shiite Muslims different from Sunnis in their belief?

I learnt Shiite muslims are the followers of Ali.
What make Shiites believe in Ali?
Some Sunnis say that Shiites are not really Muslims. Why is that?
Could you please explain with some exmaples.

Thank you.

The disputations between Sunni and Shiite are over the succession of the califate. The Shiites believe that a descendent of the prophet (Ali was the nearest descendent) and according to the Shiites the rightful calif which they call an Imam. The closest companions of Mohammed took a vote and elected Malik (I think his name was but my Islamic history is very rusty). Sunnis believe the succession of the califate is an electoral issue not a hereditery inheritance.

A Humbling Experience That Would Change Your Life

I am still in Jakarta. It is night, now. The city was a breathtaking sight at night from the 24th floor apartment unit where we (I, my wife and friends) were staying. I had a great experience today. My host in Jakarta, Diana, told us earlier in the morning that she is taking us somewhere special to celebrate early Christmas.

She brought us to her friend’s house, a very humble couple. I don’t have any permission from them yet to mention their names in the article. As such, I would not mention their names. Quite some time back, this couple noticed some poor children in the slums near their residential area; some were also orphans and illiterate. Most of these children earn a living clearing rubbish in the surrounding areas. They hardly have food on their table, let alone acquiring an education.

Wanting to help these children, the couple volunteered and used their home to give them education. Soon, a number of their friends, including Diana, volunteered to teach the children whenever they had time to do so. They collectively shared and paid for expenses incurred which included books, food, transport, etc., for the children when they come to study. They do not want to form any organization or society but just do their bit in improving the lives of these children.

They also make it a point to celebrate both Hari Raya festival and Christmas each year as the volunteering teachers, and the children were Christians and muslims. There were no classes today but all were present just to celebrate Christmas. They were singing songs and presenting gifts to the children. Then they sat down to enjoy the meal together as how a normal family would.

Both my wife and I had tears in our eyes. It was a humbling experience. My heart was overflowing with joy, totally touched at what was taking place in front of my eyes. One thing was the greatness of love in the hearts of those who volunteered to educate the children and the other was, watching the followers (both the teachers and children) of two major religions in the world, Christianity and Islam, mingling with each other comfortably as one family, and openly caring for one another.

Observing what was happening before me, I thought to myself that adults can learn so much from those gathered here today, especially from the children. They were so polite and kind. I could not thank Diana enough for such a wonderful experience. Thank you again dear! You are a wonder!

I leave you with the lyrics for the last song they sang for the day. The song is in Indonesian Malay language. I was told that it was written by a popular Indonesian songwriter, Franky Sahilatua. I have translated it into English. I am not confident of the accuracy, though, even though their language has similarity to Malaysia’s Malay language. I hope I did justice to the song. I have translated it from Bahasa Indonesia to English. This article is dedicated to Diana and her friends, and of course the children!

English translation:

TOGETHERNESS

One day as we were sitting on the beach, and looking at the waves of the sea that is calming down, birds fly playing in the waters. This voice of Nature warms our soul,

As the rays of the sun begin to set, your guitar plays the melody of Unconditional Love.
In that one moment, hearts become one, vibrating the soul.

Chorus:

This Togetherness, please don’t let it go by fast.
This Togetherness, I would like to remember always.
My heart is at peace, my soul calm beside you.
My heart is at peace, my soul calm being with you.

Song written by: Franky Sahilatua.

Beautiful lyrics, isn’t it?

How are the current issues with Islam different to previous ones with Christianity?

Granted I do not know all that much about the small details and statistics about either, but all I have been hearing about Islamic violence and killings sounds just like what the Christians did throughout history to gain power and more followers.

So my questions are;
How is the current situation with Islam different to the way Christianity used to be?
and Why are modern Christians so uptight about Islam, when they’re following the same religion which has brought about so many murders itself?

Christians stoned people they disliked to death.

muslims do the same, but run people over with tanks instead of stoning them.

Is Islam evil or are the extremists making it appear that way?

I know this is a borderline offensive question but nonetheless I want to hear your opinions. Is it Islam’s teachings themselves that are wrong of is it the way extremists are interpreting them? I haven’t studied the Koran so if there are any excerpts from it you’d all like to share supporting your stance, please do.

I have read the Koran and I say anything written by a thief and murderer is evil. Mohammad told his followers to take the spoils of their raids on caravans carrying salt, which was like gold in the desert and other supplies to divide it five ways, his way he got 2/5th of it.
At El Qatar he told his followers to kill the women Children and all the older men and women,so they could not seek revenge against him or them
. He had his best Friend killed when he told him this was not what he preached, not the way a Holy Man would stop him.
It was not a religious war he was fighting it was a war of thieves against the soldiers, who were trying to protect their supply trails through the desert. Mohammad was smart enough to know that a thief would never be able to keep his followers without a cause so he started his own religion.. There is no indication he ever repented or cared about anyone but himself and his wife, and family.
According to some other sources I’ve read, you could ly and steal from unbelievers(but not believers) and win points to get to paradise, so they can tell you what you want to hear and not what they really think and be able to get to heaven or paradise. Most Islamic people only read what they want to in the Koran, but they also follow the Torah, which is part of the Hebrew Bible, and that section of the Islamic faith that goes by it and not just the Koran, which is the main Islamic followers. They are taught the same commandments as all Jewish Temples and Christians. The extremist who go by the Koran and only the Koran are usually, the ones that are always killing and following their "prophets" teachings. Which pretty much lets them do or say what they want and go to paradise.
